Paris, Oct. 15, 2024 — In a historic ceremony held in Paris, France was formally inducted into the Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender (MNF-OOD), marking a new era in global space defense cooperation. On October 14, General Stephen Whiting, Commander of the U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) and MNF-OOD, alongside French Space Command leader Major General Philippe Adam, welcomed France’s participation in the growing coalition of spacefaring nations committed to protecting the space domain.

Representatives from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which joined the force earlier this month, were present at the ceremony, highlighting the increasing number of allies working to deter aggression in space and safeguard shared assets.

Strengthening Global Space Defense

France’s membership in the MNF-OOD is a significant expansion of the multinational initiative, originally established in 2013 under U.S. Strategic Command. Since then, the operation has evolved into a broad international collaboration focused on enhancing space operations, strengthening the resilience of satellite systems, and deterring potential adversaries from launching hostile actions in space.

The primary mission of MNF-OOD is to optimize space operations across participating nations, improving mission assurance, and reducing the spread of debris orbiting Earth — a growing concern as more nations launch satellites and test space capabilities. France’s inclusion into the force adds another layer of expertise and technology to the coalition’s already robust efforts.

General Whiting praised France’s accession, noting that the partnership is rooted in a long history of defense collaboration between the U.S. and France. “The inclusion of France into MNF-OOD builds upon our enduring partnership and codifies our shared commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the domain against the growing range of threats,” Whiting said. “Seamlessly integrating with our international partners yields a collective, asymmetric advantage that cannot be replicated by any one nation, command, or service acting on their own.”

A Strategic Move for France

For France, joining the multinational space defense effort signifies a major step in its strategic positioning as a key player in global space operations. French Space Command has invested heavily in bolstering its capabilities, and this move underscores France’s commitment to defending space as a vital arena of military and commercial interest.

“Joining the Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender is a return to the spirit of La Fayette, to defend together the freedom of space against growing threats,” said Major General Philippe Adam. “It marks a new stage in the conduct of military space operations in coalition and sends out a clear message of strategic solidarity with our allies.”

This expansion is part of a broader push by USSPACECOM to invite key partners to join the defense operation, with Germany and New Zealand having also joined in 2024. The move reflects a heightened focus on multilateral cooperation in space, as threats from anti-satellite weapons, cyber-attacks, and orbital debris increase.

A Growing Coalition of Space Allies

The rapid expansion of the MNF-OOD illustrates the growing recognition among spacefaring nations of the need to secure space as a critical domain for military, economic, and civil infrastructure. The coalition, which now includes some of the world’s most advanced space-faring nations, aims to enhance resilience in space-based systems and to prevent any single actor from dominating the space domain.

In addition to enhancing defense coordination, Operation Olympic Defender focuses on space situational awareness (SSA), the exchange of real-time data about space threats, and the integration of military space capabilities across borders. With France’s membership, the MNF-OOD has further strengthened its capacity to defend space assets that are essential to communications, navigation, and defense operations worldwide.

Looking Ahead

As space becomes an increasingly contested environment, the strategic importance of multinational cooperation in space defense cannot be overstated. France’s entry into MNF-OOD marks a critical development in global security, signaling that the world’s leading powers recognize space as a domain that must be defended collectively.

With the growing number of threats and actors in space, from rogue states testing anti-satellite missiles to the proliferation of commercial satellites and debris, the international effort to secure space is more crucial than ever. MNF-OOD’s expansion serves as a reminder that in the 21st century, space is the new frontier of defense, and no nation can go it alone.

As the global space defense coalition grows, the focus remains clear: ensuring that space remains a safe, accessible, and secure domain for all of humanity.
