One serviceman was killed, and another wounded in a sudden attack near Grozny.
Grozny, Chechen Republic – A Russian National Guard convoy was ambushed on Sunday in the Groznensky District of Chechnya, leaving one serviceman dead and another wounded. Unknown gunmen launched the attack around noon near Petropavlovskaya station, targeting a Ural military truck carrying personnel from Rosgvardia, Russia’s National Guard.
Witnesses described the incident as swift and coordinated, with the attackers opening fire on the convoy and fleeing before security forces could respond. “The attackers seemed well-coordinated and left before security forces could respond,” said a resident, speaking anonymously.
In response to the assault, Chechen security forces, led by regional head Ramzan Kadyrov, have heightened security measures, increasing patrols and establishing additional checkpoints in the area. Local authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators, but the incident has prompted an investigation to determine if the ambush is linked to broader security issues within the region.
Rosgvardia has been active in Chechnya and the greater North Caucasus, tackling insurgency and separatist movements. This region has faced periods of unrest, though Kadyrov’s administration has sought to maintain stability through a combination of stringent security measures and heavy National Guard presence.
With no group yet claiming responsibility, this ambush underscores the challenges of maintaining security in Chechnya and highlights the potential resurgence of rebel activity in an area that has long been a focal point for both insurgency and counter-insurgency operations.
