The Carrier Vessel Tactical Support Center (CV-TSC) is a comprehensive system designed to enhance situational awareness within Carrier Strike Groups (CSG), primarily focusing on shipboard self-defense capabilities, particularly in Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) and Surface Warfare (SUW) scenarios on aircraft carriers. As a pivotal force multiplier, CV-TSC plays a crucial role in providing operational support for MH-60R helicopters and exercising operational control (OPCON) over P-3/P-8 aircraft. The system is dedicated to delivering frequent capability updates, conducting testing and certification, and promptly fielding system upgrades and cybersecurity patches.
Overview
CV-TSC acts as an integral component of the CVN combat system, ensuring increased operational efficiency through various functionalities:
- Operational Support: CV-TSC extends operational support to MH-60R helicopters and holds OPCON for P-3/P-8 aircraft.
- Incremental Development: The program facilitates incremental development, allowing the Fleet to receive frequent capability updates.
- Interoperability: CV-TSC maintains interoperability with existing and future interfaces, supporting mission data exchange effectively.
- Data Processing and Analysis: The system improves track/sensor processing and analysis techniques, enhancing mission planning and execution.
- Cybersecurity Measures: Implementing robust cybersecurity measures, CV-TSC ensures the secure employment of CVN self-defense capabilities.
Functionality
CV-TSC integrates data from various sources, including Off-Board Aircraft, Organic Platform Sensors, Link-16 Track Data, Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) Track Data, Global Command and Control System (GCCS) Over-the-Horizon Track Data, and Environmental and Threat Databases. The system assesses threats and assists the Tactical Action Officer (TAO) and CSG in effectively deploying CVN self-defense capabilities.
The system’s functionalities include:
- Real-Time Information Generation: CV-TSC generates real-time ASW/SUW information and recommendations.
- Tactical Planning: The system supports tactical planning and employment of ASW/SUW assets.
- Data Processing and Analysis: CV-TSC processes and analyzes ASW/SUW sensor data.
- Distribution of Tactically Significant Data: The system ensures the distribution of tactically significant data to relevant stakeholders.
Background
CV-TSC, initiated in 1973, has evolved into a post-milestone C Acquisition Category (ACAT) III program. Originally intended to provide ASW/SUW support capabilities to S-3 Viking fixed-wing aircraft and SH-3 Sea King helicopters, the latest variant, AN/SQQ-34C(V)2, began fielding in 2012. This variant incorporates substantial upgrades, integrating tactical and sensor data from MH-60R helicopters into the ship’s combat systems, significantly augmenting the aircraft carrier’s ASW/SUW capabilities.
Plans for CV-TSC include Technology Insertion (TI) 16 to address processor obsolescence, additional processing capabilities for MQ-4C Triton support, and integration with upcoming ASW/SUW aircraft. The system is currently fielded on Navy Enterprise Common Processing, Display, and Communications equipment, embodying the Navy’s commitment to advancing carrier-based tactical capabilities.
